Ronda Rousey wins Royal Rumble in return to WWE; sets up championship match at WrestleMania
Former UFC champion Ronda Rousey returned to WWE on Saturday night, making a surprise appearance in the women’s Royal Rumble match, outlasting 29 other women to win the match. With the win, Rousey will have a championship match at WrestleMania on April 2 or 3 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
Rousey last competed in WWE at WrestleMania 35 in 2019, losing in the main event match and ending her 231-day reign as Raw women’s champion. Her WWE career had begun at the 2018 Royal Rumble when she signed a full-time contract. That followed a mixed martial arts career in which she won her first 12 matches, becoming a global superstar before two losses ended her run.
The main event of WrestleMania 35 involving Rousey, Charlotte Flair and Becky Lynch (the winner) was the first women’s match in WWE history to main event the show.
It was long believed Rousey would return to WWE at some point, but she was also clear about wanting to start a family. She welcomed a daughter this past September, her first child. Almost exactly four months later, she returned to professional wrestling.
Who will Rousey face at WrestleMania?
Chris Vannini, national college football reporter: Her opponent is unknown for now, but the two most likely names are her opponents from that WrestleMania 35 main event: Flair and Lynch. Both are current world champions. A matchup with Lynch would be an opportunity to make up for her defeat. A matchup with Flair would be a headline-making event against Ric Flair’s daughter, one of the most decorated women’s wrestlers in history.
In her first run, Rousey was portrayed by WWE as a hero character (a “babyface”), but fans slowly turned against her and rallied behind Lynch. It will be interesting to see if WWE pushes Rousey as a face again, as both Lynch and Flair are villain characters right now.
